Each month I give my verdict on who has shown the world the strongest and most attractive brand. My latest personal brand of the month goes to…

Vivienne Westwood

Here’s why:
Love her or hate her, she has an undeniably strong personal brand… and you know exactly what she stands for.

Earlier this month, I attended a viewing of the documentary “How to Change the World ”, the amazing story of the origins of Greenpeace. A Q and A panel discussion followed, with our 74-year-old fashion icon and fearless campaigner, Dame Vivienne Westwood, amongst the panelists. Her presence was a clear reflection of her involvement in environmental activism. She was bold, passionate, authentic and unapologetic…and we wanted more.

The following week, let’s just say she made some rather huge waves by driving a tank to David Cameron’s constituency home in Oxfordshire in a protest against the new fracking licenses being pushed through parts of northern England, as the chemicals used during that could harm the environment. Westwood is a longtime campaigner for environmental causes, having previously protested against fracking and oil drilling in the Arctic.

The week after that, she was busy dazzling crowds with her new collection at London Fashion Week. Needless to say, it’s been an eventful month for Viv!

One of the many things I love about Westwood is she wears her values on her sleeve. She also showcases them on the catwalk, using her shows as a platform for her cultural and environmental activism. She has even joined forces with the UN on environmental and ethical trade projects, and works tirelessly to raise awareness of human rights issues. Her vision and passion are also captured in her Manifesto, “Active Resistance to Propaganda”, which has evolved through her fashion shows. Her unique history, unconventionality, outspokenness, activism and fearless personality seem to be interwoven with her striking creations. There’s clearly more to the Westwood brand than producing clothes and accessories.

It’s no wonder that Vivienne Westwood is one of the most influential fashion designers and activists in the world today.
